Questions about EE...))
Hello everybody!=)
I am the 1st year of the new UWC in Costa Rica! Everything here is so great: the environment, the people, the residences, nature…
As you know we have to write an excellent extended essay as a part of the IB program. I just wanted to ask you for good advice concerning the topic of my future work. As far as I can guess a great part of uwc_community in livejournal is much more experienced than I am so, please, could you give me a hint or a suggestion about my EE theme?:)
I was wondering of writing this work based on “Pride and prejudice” by Jane Austen (English A2 subject). As far as I know, it is quite a popular novel. According to the EE requirements, we need to create something extra-ordinary, something really special. So, I would like to ask you about the topic, probably I will connect it with the movie with Keira Knightley (“Pride and prejudice”). I would like to analyze the characters of the heroes but I am not sure of it. So, if you please can give me any hints, advices concerning the requirements and standards of writing EE as well, it will be so perfect!:D
Thank you very much!!!
It is really very important for me and I cannot decide it just be myself, so, I need your help=)
Most lovely greetings to you from all UWCCR!))
You are welcome to visit us in such a great place in the world!:)
Best regards,
Yesik.

We want peace in the Middle East!
There's been a great (in a sense) string of emails back and forth between LPCers. I think I'm missing half of them because there seem to be numerous "mass LPC people" email lists and I get replies that have replies to others that I haven't seen yet...but even with some surely missing, what I'm reading is incredible.

It's hard to believe that this is happening where my friends live. It really makes this whole thing a whole lot more emotional for me. But it's great to read opinions from both sides of the conflict and see the call and longing---not just that, the activism--for peace. One of my Israeli co-years, along with our Egyptian co-year, has written up a petition:

This petiton is meant to influence decision makers on all sides of the
recent conflict between Hezballah, Lebanon and Israel. It is meant to
stop the viloence and especially the suffering, death and pain of
people, human beings on all sides.
we're planning to send it-when we get enough signatures- to
responsibles in Lebanon , Israel and the United Nations.

It's hosted by ipetitions, which I'm slightly skeptical about, but I figure that signing it can't hurt, and if it works--then GREAT! So, here's a link: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/wewantpeace

United world college Costa Rica (UWCCR)
Hello, everybody!
I’ve entered the United world college in Costa Rica (UWCCR)! I am so happy to join the most wonderful world community of UWC! This is a new UWC joined in 2006. I hope that I’ll enjoy myself there, make friends with people from all over the world and get an international education. Moreover, I would like to try to make our world more peaceful and friendly (I hope it is possible but only when a lot of like-minded people exist together) and I hope that there will be lots of like-minded people. Can anybody tell me some useful information about Costa Rica? Has any of you ever been there? Can you give me a piece of advice about UWC? I mean what should I bring there and so on. Thank you.

Happy birthday to us!
Dear all,

today Red Cross Nordic UWC celebrated its 10th birthday!! that is, we opened in 1995.

We had a big feast, guests included HM Queen of Norway Sonja, Norwegian ministers for culture, development and education, and head of Norwegian Red Cross.
Of course the whole campus was to be shiny clean...
We're all very happy (no classes today! :)) and proud ))) and ate some cake.

Interested In Applying
Hello. I just recently found out about UWC and I immediately fell in love with it. The idea of going to a school that focuses on teaching students to embrace a variety of cultures, to take an active role in making positive changes in the world, and to be eco-friendly is remarkable. I am eager to apply to a UWC and I am curious as to what the application process is like.
I’m a high school freshman at a public school in the United States. My grades are decent, but not perfect. I am a member of my school’s Model United Nations and Debate teams. Are there any specific things that I should do to increase my chances of getting in? What kinds of virtues helped current/ former students to get in?
I’m glad to join this community, and I hope that some other members will be able to answer my questions regarding application and just give me a better sense of what going to a UWC is like. Thank you. :)

Graduation
Graduation is fast approaching, and this year we've got a large committee set up to organize the last few days of school so that the send-off isn't as abrupt, and so that there is a more closure for the second years.

I'm a first year, so obviously I haven't experienced the last days before, but I know that it is going to be an emotional time for all of us.

I'm in charge of coming up with meaningful games to fill up two hours of the Sunday afternoon. Do any of you have any good suggestions? Perhaps from your own graduations or other experiences.

Right now we've thought of some silly ones, like Donut Pinata (like the Mexican game, only with donuts...) and a campus-wide water balloon fight, and a game that is half and half (meaningful/silly) that I play back home, called Wink. (They play it at Mahindra for learning names...called Twisted Screw or something) In Wink, you sit in two circles, in partners, and the partnerless person calls out a category (eg "Anyone who is going to Europe for university") and the anyone within the inner circle who the category applies to tries to get to him/her while their partner tries to hold them back.

Thanks for your help!!

Hi everyone,

My name is Kenneth Martin, I went to UWC Atlantic until a year ago (2002-2004). Currently going to Earlham College, in the States (Indiana, if anyone wants to really know). There's about 13 other UWC students here, all my year as well. If you have any friends or co-years here that you'd like to get back in contact with, please tell.

And on the subject of post-UWC depression, this is my first year away yet, about to draw to a close. University is certainly a step down, in all manner of ways, but I think I have just begun to deal with that. I say begun with reason; it took a trip to Atlantic College for my mid-term holiday to start to understand what the UWC experience meant to me.

Hiya.
Hello. I'm Linda, and I recently applied to UWC--but I haven't heard anything back yet! Anyway, I hope I'm allowed here (I'm very hopeful about being accepted, but I'm still quite uncertain as to my status as an applicant), and I sort of randomly stumbled across this community.

So this may be a weird topic
But can we talk about the post UWC depression?

I mean, sadly, I am still suffering sometimes from that. The closest thing I have found to that brilliant family in NM on Tulane's campus is a fraternity.... and before you go all stereotyped on my ass, trust me, it's a good group of guys.

But seriously.

How did we all deal with the fact of leaving the UWC?
